Bridge cameras are as the name suggests cameras that have some qualities of compact camera’s and some of DSLRs that literally bridge the gap between these two.
You won’t find much difference in the resolution between bridge cameras and compact cameras although most will offer 10 Mega Pixels or more.
Bridge cameras will generally have a larger sensor which will give better image performance than a compact camera. Check out our SLR guide for more information on sensors
Although some of these features can be found on some high end compact cameras they are most common on bridge cameras. Bridge cameras will often offer all the features that compact cameras do but will allow you to have more manual control over your photography.
Bridge cameras can give you more manual control, aperture priority, shutter speed priority and full manual. Hot shoes allow you to fit an external flash. Bridge cameras still provide an option for an optical view finder on many models but be sure to check
Bridge cameras tend to be larger than compact but smaller than SLRs
Some bridge cameras have super zooms or mega zooms which are 20 or 30x optical zoom great for skylines. A few models even have interchangeable lenses smaller than DSLRs
